SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – Our school uses conscious culture creation tools in order to allow children to act as equal partners to adults in the space to create agreements and community standards. Students and facilitators work together to maintain school cleanliness.
- Youth Autonomy – Children can choose how they play or learn and where all day at our facility.
- Access to Tools and Technology – We allow technology use as per agreements made with each family, access local resources as according children’s desires, travel around our community, provide a budget for students to use independently, and encourage internet safety and literacy.
- Adult Allies – We don’t employ any grading or testing of any kind. We have two full-time facilitators as well as parent volunteer each day. Parent volunteers are well informed about SDE spaces and have facilitation training.
- Free Age Mixing – Ages 5-13 is our rough age range with no age separation. Younger and older siblings, adults using the space for co-working, adult volunteers, etc...can be found in the building each day.
- Community – Not only do our students use conscious culture creation through use of Community Mastery Board, our adults in the space also use these measures to problem solve & work together to create agreements. We have ethical standards of trust for all members.
