Dennison describes the story of First Street School, a New York City liberatory school in the mid-1960’s. First Street School was built on the ideals of Neill and Tolstoy. The book is told through Dennison’s reflections on education and journal entries during his time as a staff member there. It is both an inspiring and disheartening look at efforts to bring real change to education. The First Street School only lasted two years, but it is a good read for those seeking to be a part of educational revolution, as many of the same student and political issues are still being faced by school founders today.
