SDE Optimizing Conditions

ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance, or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions for young people to succeed in SDE.  Survey answers:
  1. Responsibility – The S in SHINE stands for Self-Directed, and that is our expectation and reality. Each individual chooses how to spend their time and what to learn.
  2. Youth Autonomy – SHINE is entirely play-based and interest-led, and adults only exert control in serious matters of safety. Children and teens have a large house and 20 acres to explore.
  3. Access to Tools and Technology – Children and teens are able to access all sorts of tools and technology as needed -- art tools. gardening tools, building tools, books, electronic circuits, computers, tablets, etc.
  4. Adult Allies – We have no grading or testing. Adults serve as guides when asked for support.
  5. Free Age Mixing – We currently have ages 5-16 enrolled in our program and a variety of adults.
  6. Community – Community is a priority for us. Children and teens lead the way in planning community events such as our carnival. We seek solutions as a group when conflicts occur or decisions need to be made.
