SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – We’re founded on the premise that children thrive when they are free to chart their own course, in a safe and supportive container, grounded in responsibility to the self, the community, and the environment.
- Youth Autonomy – We trust that young people will follow their passions, push their limits, and seek the knowledge they will need to thrive in a changing world. We trust young people to set their own goals and create their own definition of success.
- Access to Tools and Technology – SB Free is committed to providing access to the highest quality resources. The offerings and activities in a self-directed school are as varied and unique as the community itself.
- Adult Allies – Our mentorship program provides students an opportunity to connect deeply with a trusted adult, receive support and encouragement, and build a relationship that can support change and growth over time.
- Free Age Mixing – Without classes that separate children into age groups, we foster the natural kind of learning that occurs between people of all ages.
- Community – Students and staff gather in our weekly School Meeting to check in, share what’s going on, and discuss topics relevant to the whole school. Decisions are taken collectively, by consensus.
