Embark Center (www.embarkcenter.org) is a democratic, self-directed learning environment where people ages ten to eighteen design their own individual and community-based learning experiences. We prioritize authentic, real-life learning over traditional academics, providing members with the time and space to explore who they are, what they love, and how to achieve their goals within a mixed-age community of friends, peers, volunteers, and staff.
We are seeking an individual who is familiar with—or willing to learn about—self-directed education (unschooling), youth rights, restorative practices (such as restorative justice and nonviolent communication), and consent-based decision-making (sociocracy).
Job specifics: 20 hours per week, September-May. We will collaborate with our intern to create working hours and duties that suit them. Applicants must be 18 years or older.
Salary: $20,000
Responsibilities may include:
Facilitating classes/workshops
Being present in the building during open hours
1:1 Mentor Relationships
Periodic Family Meetings
Tutoring individual members in specific areas of mutual interest
Attending field trips
Administrative duties
Periodic Community Social Events
Administrative duties include:
Board and staff meetings
Marketing/Outreach
Volunteer Management
Financial Management
