SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – Some of our families unschool, and this choice is respected and supported by the group.
- Youth Autonomy – Our time together is lightly structured (hikes, poetry tea times) or entirely unstructured. We gather at a place and let the kids take it from there. Occasionally the kids organize something and the adults help them follow through with their ideas.
- Access to Tools and Technology – We meet in our homes during the winter months. This allows us to explore each other's board game collections, art supplies, musical instruments, and other bits and pieces related to our individual interests (knitting, henna, cooking etc).
- Adult Allies – We meet regularly enough that we get to know each other's children and form relationships with them. None of us check up on other people's kids to verify academic progress; we're there only to enjoy our time together.
- Free Age Mixing – Our group is family based and so includes babies, adults, and children from preschool to teen.
- Community – We don't have any formal decision making process. We share our ideas, get excited about things, and focus on shared enthusiasms. Adults decide on when and where we will meet, and both adults and children propose activities that we can do together.
