SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – All our learners are in charge of their own activities: what they want to do and when and how. We provide the setting for them to explore freely and to take the initiatives they want.
- Youth Autonomy – Children have the freedom to explore what they want, which means most of the day is dedicated to free play and exploration of various projects. The adults give a maximum of support with a minimum of interference. There are no mandatory activities.
- Access to Tools and Technology – Our kids have access to materials and tools that they need in order to learn how to deal with life. That includes playing with riskier things like matches (how to make a fire) and machetes.
- Adult Allies – As facilitators we constantly work on creating a conscious culture together with the children. We want everyone to develop authentic relationships in order to feel emotionally safe.
- Free Age Mixing – We mix kids from ages 4 to 18 with two focused youth programs (Wild & Free: Ages 4-6) and (Independent Explorers: Ages 7 +)
- Community – Children are also people, and we treat them as such. They all have the right to be heard and listened to - however young they might be.
