This work offers a brief introduction that allows parents to think about the meaning of education and why we send children to school. Over multiple chapters, the book looks at different types of school organizations including chapters on democratic and free schools such as Summerhill and Sands in the United Kingdom. For those areas where alternatives don’t exist, she lays a basic framework to show how new small schools could be started. She ends with discussion of how progress is being made in alternative education across the board, but how parents must act as the change agents for making alternatives such as Self-Directed schools an option for their children.
