What’s going on?
During the height of the pandemic, it seemed like, at least in the United States, people were leaving the school systems en masse. ASDE certainly had an influx of interest and folks looking for support, and the homeschooling numbers were up and are continuing to rise. Many SDE centers opened during the pandemic and were able to provide support and alternatives to folks who seemed to now be witnessing and understanding many of the issues with schools. However, from anecdotal evidence and our own connections, it does seem like the unschooling and SDE increase is falling back, and many SDE centers are struggling.
What have you all seen and experienced lately? Is unschooling still on the rise? Are SDE centers maintaining their growth in attendees? Do you have more friends, family, and people you know questioning school? Or are we going back to the same old system, yet again?
Brooklyn Apple Academy Needs Our Support!
An SDE space needs our support to stay open! ASDE is here to support the movement as an Alliance, and sometimes that includes supporting mutual aid efforts in the SDE community. When SDE spaces stay accessible and supportive for folks, that helps support our mission and vision of collective liberation and access to SDE for everyone. Brooklyn Apple Academy has worked hard to bring accessible options to diverse folks, and make their programs accessible financially. We want to share the message to support them when they are struggling and need it most! Here is their fundraiser (with more info), and their auction. Please donate what you can and spread the word!
“This school year got off to a rocky start: We had to cut classes and had to invest enormous effort to get our message to new families. We’re on more solid ground now, but during that period we were unable to pay rent for two months.
We need your help to fund our goal of keeping Brooklyn Apple open to all. We would be so grateful for your contribution. If you have the means, please support us with a financial contribution today. No contribution is too small!.”
*Auction ends 4/13/24

Magazine Open Call: SDE Advertisement
April’s Open Call is about playing with the concept of advertising SDE
What does an SDE ad feel like? What does it highlight? Does it point out what’s wrong with other educational philosophies or does it only focus on the strengths of SDE?
For this Open Call, feel free to submit a short video, graphic illustration/comic, or written video script that might inspire someone to consider SDE for their family.
Please submit your entries to janice@self-directed.org by Tuesday, April 30th, 2024.
